Saturday saw the return of limited overs cricket and, for our 1s & 3s, that was excellent news!
Our 1s went over to Highgate, looking to end the season as it had started. However, at the halfway point things were looking challenging. Highgate posted 270-6 from their 45 overs as our bowlers were never quite able to build sustained pressure.
With the bat, things started well with Joe Naughton and Tasin Iqbal putting on 47 for the first wicket. Joe eventually fell for 60. However, a string of wickets put the pressure on as we found ourselves 154-5. Cue Jonah Healey and Harry Wilkins. While Harry kept things steady from his end (a near-enough run-a-ball 43*), Jonah set about the Highgate bowling attack hitting 13 fours and 4 sixes for his 103* off 72 balls. A vicious batting display, which brought us home victorious with 5 balls to spare.
Similarly, the 3s bowled first and faced an uphill task as Winchmore Hill put on a good total at the Grammar School. Our bowlers were able to get wickets but the dreaded 'Extras' helped out our opponents, as we offered them 37 free runs. Noor Maroof (3-45), Adnan Zameer (2-51) and Mohsin Mahmood (2-37) were the pick of the bowlers.
In reply, we get off to a terrible start, falling to 19-3. However, in Muhammad Bilal we have an excellent batsman. Bilal hit a destructive 127*, ably supported by Hanan Bokhari (31) and Abdul Salam (22*), to guide us to victory. Also, fortunately, the Winchmore Hill bowlers repaid the favour and handed us 35 extras of their own. A vital win in the 3s' search for promotion.
The 4s faced difficult opponents in Old Camdenians but put up an excellent fight. Bowling first, we struggled to contain their batsmen as they put on 285 in their 40 overs. Joe Simons was the pick of our bowlers, taking 4-45.
Chasing 285 was always going to be challenging but a couple of our youngsters gave it their best shot. Ayaan Bokhari's 70* and Zohair Javaid's 52 pushed us along, but unfortunately we just didn't have enough on the day to get close, finishing on 191-6.
Finally, our 2s hosted Stoke Newington at Lincoln Road and never really got close. Stoke Newington batted first and were on top from the early stages as they put on 247 in their 45 overs. Adam Baxter was the standout bowler with 4-26.
We lost early wickets and despite Adeel Saeed's (42) and Callum Wick's (32) efforts to rebuild we never got going, as we finished 115 all out. Not the finest day at the office.
